- Possible fixes when Windows Vista shows 'Unidentified Network' or 'Local Only'. This has been a known 'issue' with Windows Vista. One of the following fixes should help with the problem.
(Note: As soon as you can get back online make sure Windows Vista has all of the latest Windows Updates along with the latest Service Pack updates.)
FIX #1
- Click on Start / Control Panel
- Make sure Control Panel is set to Classic View (the option is in the upper left hand side of window)
- Double click on Network and Sharing Center
- Under the 3 icons Network should show 'Private'
- If the connection says ‘Public’ / Click on Customize on the far right/ Select Private / Click Next / Grant Permission / Close / Reboot PC
FIX #2
- Click on Start / Control Panel
- Make sure Control Panel is set to Classic View (the option is in the upper left hand side of window)
- Double click on Network and Sharing Center
- Click on Manage Network Connections
- Right click on the Local Area Connection / Click Disable / Grant Permission
- Right click on the Local Area Connection again / Click Enable / Grant Permission
- Reboot PC
FIX #3
- Click on Start / Control Panel
- Make sure Control Panel is set to Classic View (the option is in the upper left hand side of window)
- Double click on Network and Sharing Center
- Click on Manage Network Connections
- Double click on the Local Area Connection
- Click on
Properties
- Uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
- Uncheck Topology Network Discovery
- Reboot PC
FIX #4
- Click on Start / All Programs / Accessories
- Right click on the
Command Prompt and click Run As Administrator
- Grant Permission
- Click on Command Prompt
- Type in: netsh int ip reset restlog.txt and hit Enter
- Type in: netsh winsock reset catalog and hit Enter
- A prompt should come up a to restart Windows
- Reboot PC
FIX #5
- Click on Start / All Programs / Accessories / Command Prompt
- Type in: ipconfig /release
- Type in: ipconfig /renew
- Reboot PC
FIX #6
- Norton Security / Antivirus products have been known to cause problems.
- If you have been experiencing problems with Norton or have recently uninstalled the software.
- You will want to download and install the Norton Uninstall Tool to completely remove Norton.
- CSInet recommends Internet Security software such as Trend Micro Internet Security or Kaspersky Internet Security
