Home Networking

  1. What is a home network?
    Quite simply, a home network lets more than one computer share devices or access services.

  2. What benefits can a home network offer me?
    A home network lets you and your family:
    • Use your CSInet High-Speed Wireless Internet service on multiple computers - eliminating the need to stand in line to use your Internet service
    • Share files without having to carry around disks between computers
    • Share devices, such as printers and hard drives (which also saves your money because you no longer have to purchase a device for each computer.)

  3. Which option is best for me?

    Choose from either wireless or wired:
    • Wireless home networking equipment is best for you if your computers are located in different rooms or if you simply enjoy the freedom of roaming anywhere in your home with your computers. Wireless is the fastest and easiest way to get a network up and running, and avoids the hassle and limitations of cables. Similar to cordless phone technology, you will be able to move your computer to any room in your house and stay connected to the network.
    • Wired networking equipment is best for you if your computers and other devices (printers, scanners, etc.) are located in one room. It is also the best solution if you are looking to maximize communication speeds between your computers.

  4. I'd like a home network. What do I need to get started?
    Follow the three simple steps below:

    Decide on the type of network you want:
    • Wireless {see wireless info above)
    • Wired {see wired info above}
    • Select the various components of your home network based upon whether you chose wireless or wired:
    • A network adapter for each computer you are connecting. {See Network Adapters below}

Need help or want to schedule and installation?
Call CSInet and we'll explain your options and setup an appointment for an installation.

  1. What is a network adapter?
    A network adapter is required for each computer that you are connecting to your home network. There are three different types of network adapters - the type you need depends upon how your computer is setup:
    • USB adapter - this external adapter connects to a computer’s USB connector on the back of your computer. Not all computers have this connector. Check yours to determine if this is an option for you. There are USB adapters for both wireless and wired home networks.
    • PC Card adapter - for laptop computers. This type of adapter is installed inside of your computer. It is shaped like a credit card. You do not need to open up your computer to install it - the network adapter simply slides into a slot on your computer. There are PC Card adapters for both wireless and wired home networks.
    • PCI adapters - this adapter is for desktop computers. You need to open up your computer and install it inside your computer. There are PCI adapters for both wireless and wired home networks.

  2. What would be a sample wireless home networking setup?
    One additional wireless adapter for each additional computer, depending on the type of computer you have:
    • Wireless Network PC Card for laptop computers
    • Wireless Network PC Card and Instant Wireless Network PCI Card for desktop computers
    • Wireless USB Adapter for desktop or laptop computers with an available USB connector
    • One AP device – called an Wireless Network Access Point.

  3. What would be a sample wired home networking setup?
    One additional wired (Ethernet) adapter for each additional computer, depending on the type of computer you have:
    • USB 10/100 Network Adapter for desktop or laptop computers with an available USB connector
    • 10/100 Integrated PC Card for laptop computers
    • 10/100 LAN Card PCI Adapter for desktop computers
    • 10 LAN Card ISA Adapter for desktop computers

  4. What is an IP address?
    A computer’s Internet Protocol (IP) address uniquely identifies its location on the Internet. An IP address is necessary to connect to the Internet and for the exchange of information. When your Internet service was first installed in your home, a network address was assigned and installed onto your computer. In order to network multiple computers, each one will need an IP address that will allow that computer to access the Internet.
